Common Tutor LMS problems we fix

Sound familiar?

Tutor LMS gets a course site live quickly. Growing it into a real academy or marketplace is where most teams need an engineer.

Instructor payouts and commissions are done in spreadsheets

We automate revenue sharing, withdrawal approvals and statements, and connect them to your payment provider and accounting exports.

You need a feature Tutor LMS does not have

Custom enrolment rules, course types, dashboards or certificate logic, built as an add-on plugin on Tutor LMS hooks so updates do not wipe it out.

An update changed the front end and broke your customizations

We move template overrides and CSS hacks into a maintainable child theme or add-on, then test each Tutor LMS release on staging before it goes live.

Security advisories keep appearing and you are not sure you are patched

We keep Tutor LMS, Pro and add-ons current, review user roles and API keys, and add a firewall and monitoring. You get a short monthly report.

Course pages and the student dashboard are slow

Query profiling, object caching, lighter page builder use and image and video delivery tuned for busy cohorts.

You want to move to Tutor LMS, or away from it

Courses, lessons, quizzes and students migrated from LearnDash, LearnPress, Teachable or Thinkific, or out of Tutor LMS to another platform.

Code-level expertise

Tutor LMS features that survive every update

Tutor LMS ships frequent releases, including the Tutor LMS 4 series in 2026. Customizations that live in an add-on plugin and use Tutor's actions and filters keep working; edits to plugin files or copied templates are the first thing to break.

  • Add-on plugins with their own settings. Nothing is lost when Tutor LMS updates.
  • Hooks before template overrides. We only override templates when there is no hook, and we track every override.
  • Tested on staging. Each Tutor LMS and Pro release is checked against your add-ons before it reaches students.

This example awards a badge and notifies your CRM when a student completes a course, using the tutor_course_complete_after action.

<?php
/**
 * Plugin Name: Academy Extras for Tutor LMS
 * Course-completion badge and CRM update.
 */
defined( 'ABSPATH' ) || exit;

add_action( 'tutor_course_complete_after', function ( $course_id, $user_id ) {
    $course_id = (int) $course_id;
    $user_id   = (int) $user_id;

    // Keep a simple badge record on the student.
    $badges = (array) get_user_meta( $user_id, 'academy_badges', true );
    $badges[ $course_id ] = time();
    update_user_meta( $user_id, 'academy_badges', $badges );

    // Tell the CRM in the background, not during the request.
    wp_schedule_single_event( time(), 'academy_crm_completed', [ $user_id, $course_id ] );
}, 10, 2 );

add_action( 'academy_crm_completed', function ( $user_id, $course_id ) {
    $user = get_userdata( $user_id );
    if ( ! $user ) {
        return;
    }
    wp_remote_post( ACADEMY_CRM_URL, [
        'timeout' => 10,
        'headers' => [ 'Content-Type' => 'application/json' ],
        'body'    => wp_json_encode( [ 'email' => $user->user_email, 'course' => $course_id ] ),
    ] );
}, 10, 2 );
tutor_course_complete_after passes the course ID and user ID. The CRM call runs from WP-Cron so students never wait for it.

Keeping Tutor LMS secure in 2026

Tutor LMS is one of the most popular WordPress LMS plugins, which also makes it a frequent target for security researchers. Patchstack's database lists more than 80 patched Tutor LMS vulnerabilities over the plugin's lifetime, and several were disclosed in September 2026 alone, including insecure direct object references and missing authorization checks affecting versions up to 4.0.8. Tutor LMS 4.0.9, released on 17 September 2026, focused on security and performance.

None of this means Tutor LMS is unsafe to use. It means updates matter, and so does how they are applied:

  • Update promptly, but on staging first. Security releases should reach production within days, after a quick regression test of your checkout, enrolment and custom features.
  • Review roles and API keys. Several recent issues affected instructors or read-only API keys. Give each role the minimum it needs and rotate keys you no longer use.
  • Add a web application firewall and alerts. A WAF and vulnerability alerts buy time between a disclosure and your update.
  • Keep custom code out of the plugin folder. If your changes live in an add-on, you can update Tutor LMS the same day without losing them.

Our LMS security checklist covers the wider picture.

How to hire the right Tutor LMS developer

Ask how they would add your feature

Listen for Tutor LMS actions and filters and an add-on plugin. Editing Tutor's files, or pasting code into the theme, will cost you on the next update.

Ask about marketplaces if you run one

Commissions, refunds, withdrawals and instructor tax details are where marketplace projects go wrong. A developer who has built them will ask about all four.

Insist on staging and version control

Every change should be tested on a copy of your site and deployed from Git, with a way to roll back.

Make security part of the job

Ask how they will keep Tutor LMS, Pro and add-ons patched after launch, and who is watching for new advisories.

Hiring a Tutor LMS expert: FAQ

How much does it cost to hire a Tutor LMS developer?

Small fixes and configuration work are billed hourly. Custom features, marketplace workflows and migrations are usually fixed-price once we have seen your site. You get a written estimate after the free technical call, before any work starts.

Can you customize Tutor LMS without breaking updates?

Yes. We build changes as a separate add-on plugin using Tutor LMS hooks, keep any template overrides to a minimum and documented, and test every Tutor LMS release on staging first.

Can Tutor LMS run a multi-instructor marketplace?

Yes. Its multi-instructor features are a good base. Most marketplaces need extra work on instructor approval, commission rules, withdrawals, refunds and reporting, which is what we build.

Is our Tutor LMS site affected by the latest vulnerabilities?

If you are not on the latest release, possibly. We can check your Tutor LMS, Pro and add-on versions against public advisories, update them on staging, test your key flows and then update production.

Do you work with Tutor LMS 4?

Yes. We update sites to the Tutor LMS 4 series, check custom templates and add-ons against it, and fix anything the new version changes.

Can you migrate us to Tutor LMS from another platform?

Yes. Courses, lessons, quizzes and students can usually be moved from LearnDash, LearnPress, LifterLMS and SaaS platforms. Progress and certificates depend on what the source can export, which we confirm before quoting.

Do you offer ongoing Tutor LMS maintenance?

Yes. Our part-time and full-time plans cover updates, security monitoring, backups, small changes and priority fixes. See LMS maintenance and support.
